American Sickness

We launched publicly in January of this year. Since then, the attention it has received has been wonderful, and a bit overwhelming. If you are receiving this it means you have signed up to stay informed about the fight for real healthcare price transparency. Many of you have also volunteered to help, and I still owe those people a reply regarding how they can.

During the past few months, while we were developing, to organize the fight for healthcare price transparency, Penguin Press was launching the most important book you may ever read about America’s broken healthcare system. The book is An American Sickness, by reporter and physician Elisabeth Rosenthal. You can help affect change by reading and sharing this book.

In An American Sickness, Rosenthal is meticulous in detailing the pricing and billing games played by insurers, hospitals, physicians, and pharmaceutical companies. More important, she documents the catastrophic consequences of these practices on many Americans who lose their financial footing, their good health, and even their lives navigating our broken system.

While this book is informative, fascinating, and horrifying, we believe the true value of An American Sickness is its ability to make us really angry. Only if we get angry enough can we achieve real change. As Thomas Jefferson famously put it, “Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.”

The truth, of course, is that we are all affected by our broken system. With healthcare quickly approaching 20 percent of American GDP, it’s hard to make the case that anyone is truly untouched by our confusing and corrupted system. So let’s get educated and let’s get angry.

Here’s my request: First, order a copy of An American Sickness. Then, after you read it, send your copy to your U.S. Representative, one of your state’s Senators or your Governor’s office. All of their addresses are online. The flood of books alone will be a good first step toward sending the message that we are not going to take it anymore.

Thanks for joining me in the fight for transparent pricing. It is the bedrock of any healthcare system we can possibly conceive. Without transparent pricing, nothing else that has been contemplated has a chance of working. And as always, use us as your resource for effecting change by denying payment, one bill at a time.
